Chardonnay 2009
Nose: Peach blossoms, nectarine and melon spliced with some crisp, green character from the whole-bunch. Notes of grilled hazelnuts from the extended time on lees. Palate: Seamless and consistent fruit with acid perfectly aligned. An enticing palate of citrus and white stonefruit with the slightest nuttiness to round it out. Well balanced and good palate length, showing all the elegance expected from cool climate Chardonnay. This wine is best when served lightly chilled. Method: All hand-picked fruit, with 50% whole-bunch pressed, and 50% destemmed and crushed. Cool-fermented on lees for 10 months with regular stirring for added complexity. No oak. Notes: This Chardonnay comes from one of the most awarded blocks of fruit in the Yarra Valley. It was low-cropped and grown without irrigation to give the grapes a more intense flavour. This wine has been reserved for us, and is a small portion of what will be this vineyards labelled wine. In previous vintages this Chardonnay has attained regular medals, with 28 given to it in one year! Nose: Classic sauv blanc notes of grass, green bean, passionfruit and pineapple. Herbaceous aroma's of lantana. Palate: Crisp, dry fruit upfront with a grassy, green character. Fairly full on the palate with decent length and soft but supple acid. More french in style, this wine would pair well with salads, asparagus and barbecued vegetables. Sauvignon Blanc 2012
Nose: A mix of subtle white florals, some gooseberry and grapefruit blossom. Classic Sauvignon Blanc with hints of freshly cut grass, followed by traces of smokey barrel fermentation and some struck match. Palate: Mirroring the nose, the palate is long and elegant, with refined fruit, flint and linear acid. There is a delicacy to this wine, and it delivers in a way reminiscent of the French Sancere styles, which is echoed by the lower alcohol. It has crisp, dry acidity and minimal residual sugar. The small portion that was barrel aged gives the wine finesse and complexity. A perfect wine to match with fine elegant food. Methods: Wild Yeast fermentation, with whole-bunch pressing. A mixture of older oak to give mouthfeel and complexity, and tank fermentation for freshness. Fruit was handpicked in the morning and immediately whole bunch pressed. No enzymes were used, instead the juice was allowed to settle naturally. After 4 days the fruit was transferred to a combination of tank (65%) and older oak (35%) to generate mouth feel and give complexity. After three months on lees the wines were blended, cold stabalised, fined and filtered. Vintage: 2012 was near perfect conditions for growing and ripening Sauvignon Blanc in the Yarra Valley. The picking window was small, with flavours going from cut grass to tropical fruits in a matter of days. Constant monitoring enabled picking to be carried out at the herbaceous stage. The grapes came into the winery in perfect condition with no signs of disease and full of flavour. This Sauvignon Blanc was dry grown with the fruit hand pruned, shoot thinned, leaf plucked on the morning side and there was no need for bunch thinning. Crop level was 2.25 tonnes per acre. This wine is best enjoyed whilst young and vibrant, however it will drink well for up to four years. Chardonnay 2012
Nose: This is a classic Yarra Valley Chardonnay exhibiting aromas of peach, nectarine and minerals along with some complex barrel characters. Palate: This wine displays a lovely balance between minerals and delicate fruit sweetness with hints of ginger and spice. A nice line of acid and some creaminess coming from time on wood provides length without overdominance. This is an extremely easy drinking style guaranteed to suit even the fussiest of palates. Method: All fruit is hand-picked in the morning and refrigerated overnight. The following morning the grapes were whole-bunch pressed. No enzymes were used, instead the juice was allowed to settle naturally. Fermentation was allowed to start naturally on full solids with no acid addition. After a select period of time, the juice was inoculated with with cultured yeast and then transferred to a combination of wood and tank for fermentation. The wine is aged in only old oak, with no new oak in the blend. The wine was then left on lees for approximately 3 months, with no battonage. Just prior to bottling the wine was cold stabalised, fined and filtered. Notes: This is a wine that will suit many foods, occasions and palates. It is a great all-rounder made by Franco D'Anna and represents exceptional value at $13. Cabernet Grenache Petit Verdot 2007
Nose: Rich red berries, plum and spices. Undertones of vanilla and some lovely barrel character. Palate: Bright berry fruit showing across the palate without too much residual sugar. Very juicy with a lovely line of acid and delicate tannin on a medium length finish. Method: Certified organic Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), Grenache (24%) and Petit Verdot (22%) sourced from Loxton was crushed and fermented separately before being blended in a mix of French and American oak. Notes: This is an unusual blend yet it works so well. I really like this wine. I like the rich red berries on both the nose and palate and I love the earthy qualities the Grenache brings to the mix. Grenache is one of my favourite varietals for this very reason. This particular wine was made on contract for a large English business who was unable to pay for it after the Global Financial Crisis. The winemaker, David Bruer and his vineyard, Temple Bruer are leaders in the organic movement in Australia and where the focal point for the formation of Organic Vignerons Australia. David contacted me after hearing about Goodwill Wine and offered me this wine at a very reasonable price. This is my new 'go to' red when I want something nice and juicy for a bbq. I highly recommend it. 13.9% Alc/Vol 8.2 standard drinks Pres. 220 added 750ml No animal products were used in the making of this wine.Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Nose: Rich dark fruit and chocolate flavours along with a touch of gum leaf lift to the nose. Palate: Mint, blackcurrant, dust, vanilla and a smattering of dry leaf matter. The balance is excellent and it rolls along the tongue without any hiccups. The juicy fruit gathers good momentum, before fine-but-assertive tannin confidently takes control on a finish of considerable length. Method: Fermented for 10 days on skins, this wine was matured on American oak for 12 months. Minimal filtration was used. Notes: This is an attractive, medium-bodied wine consistent with what one would expect from the rich red earth of Australia's premier Cabernet region. It is a light yet insistent wine, which will mature well for the next 3 - 5 years. Merlot 2005
Nose: Brooding aromas of blood plum and dark spices, with some raspberry, violets and subtle vanillin oak. Palate: Juicy and moreish, with some succulent acid. Raspberries, blackberries and fleshy blood plum flavours with some peppery spice on a long finish. Smooth, integrated tannins with hints of charred, vanillin oak help this wine deliver in a big way that still carries the agreeable seamlessness expected of Merlot. Decant for at least 15 mins, ideally 30 mins. This wine definitely benefits from some breathing time, opening up the bouquet and harmonising the palate. Method: Fruit sourced from a single vineyard. The wine was matured in a mix of 2nd use French barriques (225 litre) and hogsheads (300 litre) oak barrels for 22 months prior to bottling. Notes: I can't honestly say I have been a fan of many Merlots, finding a majority of them a little underwhelming. Often dubbed "the wine with a hole in it", Merlot often lacks presence on the middle palate, and as such can be an unrewarding quaff. It is most often used to blend in wines that need some taming. This Merlot made us really take notice of just what this varietal can offer, and still has the smooth tannin and long finish that makes Merlot such an easy drink. This wine is an excellent example of the varietal, and is versatile enough to accompany many dishes. This wine will further develop with careful cellaring over 2-5 years, or is ready to drink now. Shiraz 2007
Nose: Rich plum and blackberries show through with pretty fragrance. Undertones of vanilla and some barrel character. Palate: Smooth berry fruit showing across the palate without too much residual sugar. Juicy with well integrated acid. Soft oak, dark plum and some spice without big alcohol heat and weight. This wine is medium-bodied with harmonious tannins, and will continue to develop in the bottle over the next few years. Method: Upper Yarra single vineyard, hand-picked fruit, aged in French and American oak for 18 months. Minimal filtration was used. Notes: Cool climate Shiraz in its element is about fragrance and character, with a more medium-bodied palate, structured acidity and seamless tannin. For this reason this Shiraz is very easy-drinking, without the mouth-puckering tannin that can result in hotter climates. It's aroma and palate show nuances of flavour that can be otherwise dominated by sugar and alcohol heat if grown in warmer conditions. This is a lovely wine and great value at $16.
