Viognier 2009

Nose: Apricot blossom, lots of florals and some yeasty, biscuity notes. Palate: Silky, smooth fruit upfront without cloying sweetness. This is a graceful wine with medium weight and nothing over done. Soft but linear acid, the palate displays consistently with the floral characters on the nose, but also gives some slight almond and stonefruit kernel, giving this wine complexity. Some mealy, shortbread flavours round out the acid and support a dry finish. Method: Single-vineyard fruit was hand-picked and fermented naturally with wild yeast in a mix of stainless steel and old french barriques. Notes: This viognier was crafted by a talented and renowned wine maker, who is known for his elegant style in winemaking. The fruit came off a single, small block. Normally priced at $25 a bottle, we have been lucky to secure a small portion before it was labelled. This wine needs a little breathing time to really open up, and it's best served slightly cooler than room temperature. It would accompany any Thai or fragrant curry dishes perfectly. Riesling 2010

Nose: Herbaceous flowers, with aromas of honeydew melon and lemon. Palate: Plenty of grassy and mineral character equaled with notes of white flowers and lemon sorbet. Gentle, pretty fruit with well balanced acid and delicate fruit sweetness, making for an easy quaff for Summer and Spring. Good length with starfruit and grapefruit on the finish. Compliments seafood, salads, and thai food. Method: Stainless steel tanks, no oak treatment. Notes: This Riesling is a good all-rounder in that it's not bone-dry, nor heavy with sugar. There's plenty of 'prettiness' balanced with a good spine of lemony acid. Fruit was sourced from a well-established Coonawarra vineyard in the northern end of the famous 'terra rossa' strip. This wine recently took a silver medal at the Limestone Coast Wine Show. 12% Alc/vol 7.1 Standard drinks Pres. 220 added 750 ml No animal products were used in the making of this wine.

Chardonnay 2009

Nose: Peach blossoms, nectarine and melon spliced with some crisp, green character from the whole-bunch. Notes of grilled hazelnuts from the extended time on lees. Palate: Seamless and consistent fruit with acid perfectly aligned. An enticing palate of citrus and white stonefruit with the slightest nuttiness to round it out. Well balanced and good palate length, showing all the elegance expected from cool climate Chardonnay. This wine is best when served lightly chilled. Method: All hand-picked fruit, with 50% whole-bunch pressed, and 50% destemmed and crushed. Cool-fermented on lees for 10 months with regular stirring for added complexity. No oak. Notes: This Chardonnay comes from one of the most awarded blocks of fruit in the Yarra Valley. It was low-cropped and grown without irrigation to give the grapes a more intense flavour. This wine has been reserved for us, and is a small portion of what will be this vineyards labelled wine. In previous vintages this Chardonnay has attained regular medals, with 28 given to it in one year! Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Nose: Classic sauv blanc notes of grass, green bean, passionfruit and pineapple. Herbaceous aroma's of lantana. Palate: Crisp, dry fruit upfront with a grassy, green character. Fairly full on the palate with decent length and soft but supple acid. More french in style, this wine would pair well with salads, asparagus and barbecued vegetables. Notes: This cool climate Sauvignon Blanc has benefited from an extended ripening season allowing intense citrus/tropical fruit characters to develop. Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2009

Nose: Fresh young stawberries and lively green apples with hints of citrus, pear and yeast. Palate: The aromas are mirrored on the palate. This is a classic wine, beautifully balanced with complex flavours and a long finish of freshly fine-tuned acid. Fine persistent bubbles add to a creamy lingering mouthfeel. Notes: This is an elegant wine right down to it's colour of pale apricot with flashes of rose making it the perfect celebratory drink, ideal for weddings or significant milestones. This wine comes with a re-sealable top. No oak was used in its making. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for 3 - 5 years to enhance it's already complex flavours. Brut NV 2009

Nose: Yeast and fruit with dry aromas of biscuit, balanced out with notes of sweet florals and melon. Palate: Delicate fruit sweetness followed by good dry characters. A fairly full but smooth palate with decent acid, giving length without overdominance. Some lingering fruit sweetness without any cloying aftertaste. An easy drinking style that lies between dry and off-dry. Some classic Chardonnay character of citrus and melon with notes of peach and nectarine. Notes: This is a wine that will suit many foods, occasions and palates. A great all-rounder in style, perfect for making Bellini's or any Champagne based cocktails. The added bonus of this wine is that it comes with it's own re-sealable top! 14% Alc/Vol 8.3 standard drinks Pres. 220 added 750ml This wine has been fined with milk products and traces may remain.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Nose: Rich blueberries and blackberries show through with pretty fragrance. Undertones of vanilla and some barrel character. Palate: Smooth berry fruit showing across the palate without too much residual sugar. Juicy with well integrated acid. Soft oak, dark plum and some spice without big alcohol heat and weight. This wine is medium-bodied with harmonious tannins, and will continue to develop in the bottle over the next few years. Method: 100% Yarra Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in French oak for 18 months (20% new oak) minimal filtration was used. Notes: Cool Climate Cabernet in its element is about fragrance and character, with a more medium-bodied palate, structured acidity and seamless tannin. For this reason this cabernet is very easy-drinking, without the mouth-puckering tannin that can result in hotter climates. Its aroma and palate show nuances of flavour that can be otherwise dominated by sugar and alcohol heat if grown in warmer conditions. 14% Alc/Vol 8.3 standard drinks Pres. 220 added 750ml No animal products were used in the making of this wine.

Cabernet Merlot 2006

Nose: Loads of mulberry and raspberry with some stalky notes. Palate: Smooth fruit balanced with some juicy acid. Flavours of blood plum, raspberry and mulberry with some dark, earthy tannin. Method: Fermented for 7 days on skins, this wine was matured in a mix of French barriques (225 litre) and hogsheads (300 litre) oak barrels for 22 months prior to bottling. The wine is an 80:20 blend with Cabernet Sauvignon the dominant variety. Notes: A medium to full bodied wine that benefits from a little breathing time to bring it together. This wine has a lean acid to it, making it very versatile and suited to a variety of dishes. This wine can be enjoyed now or will develop with careful cellaring over the next 3 - 5 years. Merlot - 20% Cabernet Sauvignon - 80% 13.5% Alc/Vol 8.0 standard drinks Pres. 220 added 750ml No animal products where used in the making of this wine.

Merlot 2006

Nose: Brooding aromas of blood plum and dark spices, with some raspberry, violets and subtle vanillin oak. Palate: Juicy and moreish, with some succulent acid. Raspberries, blackberries and fleshy blood plum flavours with some peppery spice on a long finish. Smooth, integrated tannins with hints of charred, vanillin oak help this wine deliver in a big way that still carries the agreeable seamlessness expected of Merlot. Decant for at least 15 mins, ideally 30 mins. This wine definitely benefits from some breathing time, opening up the bouquet and harmonising the palate. Method: Fruit sourced from a single vineyard. The wine was matured in a mix of 2nd use French barriques (225 litre) and hogsheads (300 litre) oak barrels for 22 months prior to bottling. Notes: I can't honestly say I have been a fan of many Merlots, finding a majority of them a little underwhelming. Often dubbed "the wine with a hole in it", Merlot often lacks presence on the middle palate, and as such can be an unrewarding quaff. It is most often used to blend in wines that need some taming. This Merlot made us really take notice of just what this varietal can offer, and still has the smooth tannin and long finish that makes Merlot such an easy drink. This wine is an excellent example of the varietal, and is versatile enough to accompany many dishes. This wine will further develop with careful cellaring over 2-5 years, or is ready to drink now. Shiraz 2006

Nose: Red and black cherries and currants. Rich Black Forest flavours with some stalky complexity. Spice and notes of white pepper behind subtle French oak. Palate: Cherries, mulberries, white pepper and some stalk up front. The fruit sweetness is balanced with mouth-watering acid and smooth, medium-bodied tannins to finish. Juicy but refined, this Shiraz is more akin to the French Rhone style 'Syrah', where subtleties and nuances in flavours are more detectable, and there is no aspect that overwhelms. Give this wine some breathing time (15-30 min), and you'll definitely be hoping you have a second bottle to follow it. Method: A wet cold summer meant very slow ripening and as a result fruit was harvested with delicate flavours, resulting in a wine that is lighter bodied than is typical in Margaret River, but true to character. Maturation was in French (approx 70%) and American (30%) oak for 12 months before fining and bottling under screw cap. Notes: This Shiraz has won 2 silvers, and a gold medal at International Wine Shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart. It received 4.5 stars from Winestate Magazine, and comes from a winery James Halliday rated 5 stars last year. Sold out in Australia, this small quantity of Shiraz was deemed for export to the USA. Thankfully, the winemakers read about Goodwill Wine and offered to sell it to us instead at a very charitable price!
